should be called an intolerable error, what unspeakable heresy is it if not that which places the most precious wounds of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, in the same number and location as the fabulous and cursed stigmata of Francis? Oh, unheard-of blasphemy and wickedness. Let us proceed.
4. Pope Adrian VI, a Fleming, had given his nuncio to the Diet of Nuremberg a formula for action, in which there were some things not inept or impious. For he said that he knew that in that Roman see, for some years now, many things had been abominable, and that everything had been changed for the worse (these are the words from the formula itself). Then he added that it was not surprising if the sickness had descended from the head into the limbs, from the supreme pontiffs to other lower prelates; that all ecclesiastical prelates had declined, each one into his own ways, and there was not one who did good. And a little later, that he would apply all his effort so that the Roman Curia first, from which, of course, every evil had proceeded, might be reformed, so that just as corruption had emanated from there to all the lower ranks, so too health and reformation might emanate from the same place to all. These also are from the formula. Finally, also this: that no one should be surprised if not all errors and abuses were immediately amended.
