as he had seen, for the disease was too deeply rooted, and not simple, but varied and multiple. When the nuncio had pronounced all these things with a clear voice in the crowded Diet, he brought forth the very formula of action and gave it to the Princes of the Holy Empire, to which they responded immediately: that they were filled with great joy because they finally heard one of all the Popes who wanted to confess that for many years sin had been committed in Rome in many ways, and that from the Pontifical summit, all evil and the plague had flowed down to all lower prelates of the Churches. That there was no one who did his duty, that all had wandered off, and that not even one from the entire number was free from guilt; and above all, it was pleasing that he promised he wanted to remove errors and vices. The Princes, I say, repeated some words from the instruction, not only the meaning, receiving and kissing such an excellent confession.
Afterwards, they added that many grievances and inconveniences had truly been brought upon the German nation by the Roman Curia (these are the very words of the Princes). To this, the nuncio (it is also worth repeating his words) replied: if in any matters the German people are burdened by the Roman Curia,
