But those for whom the goal is to be held in esteem, to pursue the friendships and all the banquets of the elite, to despise those beneath them, and to pursue those above them with envy and hatred, their minds are most alien from Christ. For to what mortal did Christ not rather increase his goods than envy them? Whom did he not deem worthy of love rather than hatred? Truly, let us consider it our duty to guard against pride, against avarice, against ambition, and against other depraved affects. Indeed, it must be guarded against religiously, lest we secretly plot one thing while showing another through hope and simulation. For what else is this but what the divine Peter said about Acts 5 Ananias and Sapphira, to lie to the Holy Spirit? But whoever dares to lie to the Holy Spirit and deceive God, who sees all things, how much more will he dare to deceive men? But we shall apply ourselves with the greatest possible zeal to the imitation of Christ, and by his example we shall learn to be humble and submissive, to prefer to serve rather than to dominate, to admire and honor others rather than neglect and despise them, and to study the church rather than private conveniences.
