and the order and manner of all things that are done and said, who will persuade me of these things if he himself is not accustomed to forgo any pleasures, and in whom no moderation of desires appears? And who will lead us to bring help to those who offer us no hope of remuneration, and in whom there is not even the slightest desire to deserve well? Much less will he lead anyone to that worship of God which is best, and at the same time most holy and full of piety, so that we may always worship God with a pure, integral, and uncorrupted mind and voice, if he himself abhors this religion, or at least values it far less than it deserves, and is of an impure and corrupt mind, and is subject to the most wicked desires? For who, if he is sluggish and remiss himself, will stir up others to the course? What prey could Christ attain with unwilling dogs? But it is truly as the common people say: that fountain is useless which is itself thirsty, and has no water that is not imported from elsewhere. Therefore, just as streams are channeled from a good fountain into the nearby meadows, so must small rivers, by which the intellects of men are irrigated, necessarily be drawn from the mind of the evangelical herald, as if from a certain fountain of piety and probity.
