How such fountains can sprout in human minds and emanate from there into others, if I may be allowed to proceed a little further in that simile, I will soon indicate in a few words. Therefore, just as that perennial abundance of waters exists in all fountains because dense air, which is in the hollow caverns of the earth, is turned into water by the terrestrial cold, and when it has filled that whole cavern, it finally erupts from there more abundantly, and by a certain continuous force received from God, it provides perpetual waters. Thus, the Holy Spirit, infused into human minds, when it has filled them entirely, sends forth thoughts, desires, voices, and actions similar to itself. But just as those cold perenially flowing waters are not accustomed to arise in low and depressed places, but rather in high mountains, in which those hollow depths of the caverns primarily exist, so those springs of wholesome words and deeds are not accustomed to arise in those crawling and sluggish on the ground, but in exalted minds, in which there is the least of earthly cares and vices. Therefore, so that we may be filled with the knowledge and delight of celestial things, it is certainly necessary that we be free and immune from earthly cares and vices.
