Hertel, Jacob · 1562

EPITHAL. M. ALB. SULCERI,
Marriage is a heavy matter, filled
With many and various dangers.
From here, the court of the Styx the underworld stirs up fierce
Spirits, who attempt to break the sacred
Covenants of the chaste marriage bed.
On the other side, the rabid world suggests
Troops of enticements,
By which it labors without end to ensnare
The souls of the pious.
The faults of one's own flesh sinful nature
Rage and harass, never resting
From preparing new struggles for the Spirit.
Pious husband, so that you may overcome,
Pious wife, so that you may overcome
The arts and deceits of Satan,
The impious dogmas of the world,
And the savage wars of the iniquitous flesh:
True patience commands you to always resume
Valid strengths,
And safely enjoying the sight of the Highest
Thunderer a classical title for God, it endures forever.
Keep as the lovable example
Of a patient soul, CHRIST.
Whoever suffers with the patient
CHRIST, will possess the honor
Of the reigning one, which will not perish.
