Curio, Sebastian · 1562

A decorative printer's ornament consists of a small floral or leaf-like motif.
Containing the defense of Augustino Curio against Francesco Robortello of Udine.
The text below is the beginning of the letter body.
A decorative initial letter 'S' introduces the text.I have often wondered with myself what the cause might be why men who are occupied in literature burn so fiercely against one another, to such an extent that they challenge each other not only in writings, but even with insults. Since this is the case, it is no wonder if I, too, who am occupied in this type of literature, have fallen into the same lot. But since it concerns me, there is no reason for me to dwell on this matter any longer.
However, I do wonder why Francesco Robortello, a man otherwise learned, has attacked me so bitterly, when I have done nothing against him that could have justly incited this anger of his. But perhaps he does this to show himself off, and to claim the primary position of praise in this field. Truly, I am not so disposed as to be moved by his insults; rather, I despise them, and if it should be necessary, I shall defend myself rightfully. Since this is so, I have no doubt that you, most distinguished men, will understand my cause and pass judgment upon it. For I know that I have done nothing against him that would not be worthy of defense on my part. Wherefore, I ask you to read this defense of mine with an unbiased mind and to pass judgment upon it.
