Affectation of figures. It must be carefully observed that all signs are adapted to the subject matter and are not unknown. The reading must be prepared primarily for the subject matter of the text, and then arranged briefly and magnificently, if possible, as it appears. You will find brevity in every place, just as it exists in others, both in Greek and in common sayings, and so too in these.

A FIGURE is a certain method by which one deviates from the correct and simple style of speaking with some degree of oratorical virtue. This is defended by authority, antiquity, custom, and the consensus of the learned, and often also by reason and the necessity of meter. It is most useful in one thing: to alleviate the weariness of daily discourse, which is always formed in the same way, and to defend us from a common style of both writing and speaking. If someone uses these figures sparingly and when the situation demands it, like a seasoning sprinkled on food, the speech will be more pleasant; but one who affects them too much will lose the very grace of variety.
It must be observed, however, that all figures cannot be contained in a certain number. Therefore, it has been decided to distinguish here, with a proper and certain method and with examples, those that are better known and used more frequently by authors. Furthermore, a figure is divided into a Trope and a Schema, or figure in the strict sense.
Trope.
A TROPE is the variation of a word or phrase from its proper meaning into a related one for the sake of ornamentation, and it is called τρόπον tropon, because it inverts and changes the meaning of a word or phrase. They call it a movement. Fab. in that book, ch. 9
Schema.
A SCHEMA, or figure in the strict sense, is some new form of writing and speaking. Or, it is a method of both writing and speaking renewed by some art.
Division of figures.
Note: the rule is topical when many names are placed? and the name is supposed to bear that name?.
Of the genus that is below, as the Physicists, Mathematicians, and Metaphysicians divide, and Physics is a higher discourse.
