What, I pray, is gold? What is a gem? What are all the shining things of the World? What are the rich, noble resources of the World? Beauty perishes as wrinkles furrow the forehead; gold with gems is often accustomed to harm life. Add that thieves lie in wait for these things, and the wave, the soldier, and the devouring fire snatch away resources. You are happy, therefore, because you see a chaste maiden come, go, into your embraces. And because you have a father-in-law grave in just piety and faith, from which he bears an everlasting name in the world. That, believe me, cannot be called a common gift which God sends down from the high citadel of the sky. It is fitting for you, therefore, not to consider this gift of little account: but be dutiful in giving thanks to the Lord, and thus you will be grateful if you live chastely after this, as you did before, and always worship Christ with honor. For if it is a crime, young men, a huge one, for the impudent to follow foul harlots outside of marriage: it will be a much greater crime, and one more heavily bound, within the bonds of marriage and the legitimate bed. Therefore, embrace only your wife with love, and take care not to violate the bed of another.
You also, Bride, shining with piety and grave in modesty, ensure that this honor of yours also lasts afterwards. It is fitting for you to follow the clear footsteps of your parent, whose name thrives everywhere. In whatever way she treated her husband everywhere, so may you treat yours by night and by day.
