Often also, although quite rarely, a varicose fullness of the veins appears, and under the entire tongue, very minute veins appear exactly like varicose veins; the same are sometimes observed on the lower lip. The pulse here, as in a quartan fever, is variable, thin, hard, frequent, and weak, according to the variety of the illness at the time. The urine is reddish, turbid, thick, and sedimentous like fresh red wine, just as it usually appears in a burning quartan fever, especially after sweating; it also has a strong odor.
PROGNOSTICS.
Scurvy is sometimes frequent in the same families, partly because the sick have used the same diet, wherefore it is thought to spread by contagion; partly because the contagion harms when, through a defect in the mouth and gums, they drink from the same cups or admit tainted spirits through constant handling. Sometimes it is hereditary from parents.
Fevers sometimes terminate in this disease. A wasting tabes consumption/wasting disease also mostly accompanies this; occasionally dropsy, and sometimes dysentery, but atrophy is almost always present.
If ulcers sometimes arise on the shins, which nevertheless rarely happens, they accept a scar with difficulty; indeed, they are very foul-smelling, malignant, and sometimes gangrenous, for the most part so corrupt that the patients do not feel a probe inserted into them.
