Just as this circle, which we name the Equator, is situated in the middle of the Torrid Zone, so too is there a line in the Zodiac which they call the Ecliptic. For whenever the line they call the Ecliptic is opposed to the Sun, the Moon happens to be eclipsed, as we shall discuss in its proper place.
This line, however, does not pass beyond the Tropics.
Besides these circles, others are necessary to know, such as the Horizon, about which we will also speak elsewhere.
Now, let us move on to the other orbs which are subject to the eighth, about which we have discussed so far; these are called the orbs of the Planets, and let us recount a few things about their motion.
All the orbs of the Planets are carried along under the Zodiac, from the east toward the west. Nevertheless, they traverse this lower world by the impulse of the first mobile original: "primi mobilis"; the primum mobile is the outermost sphere in geocentric cosmology, believed to impart motion to all inner spheres upon which they are supported, namely in the space of twenty-four hours; this kind of motion is commonly called the "rape" original: "raptus"; an enforced, violent, or rapid snatching movement. For these are endowed with their own natural motion, which they nonetheless perform from east toward the west. This same thing was previously set forth by us regarding the Sun, which experience itself also testifies.
