I cultivated therefore as a youth the studies of Mathematics with what diligence I could: even in more mature age I never abhorred them: yet both the study of Medicine and the present manner of life forced me, albeit unwillingly, to abandon them for many years. But now, while I was watching this unusual new star, and silently pondering within myself the wondrous providence of God in it: and while in the meantime various opinions of various people were emerging, which were both foreign to the art of Astronomy and too light to illustrate as owed the wondrous providence of God: I began, insofar as the science of Astronomy provided, to think more studiously and to recall long-intermitted studies: to which I was also excited by the letters and public writings of friends.
