But the very turbulent state of the present time, and the not-vain thought of the future, also stimulated me: finally, those very events among which we now seem to consist, for the causes that preceded, and I seemed not only to wonderfully refresh my spirit with these meditations: but also to prepare myself for patience, to strengthen myself with consolations, to raise myself to the hope of eternal life, and to keep myself in the meditation of it. And although I did not see myself performing those things which should have been done in such a controversy of opinions: yet because I applied a moderate diligence in my observations, it seemed pleasant to me that, even by this occasion, it was permitted for me to repeat the studies of my youth. A little later also emerged another writing by Hieronymus Munnozius the Spaniard, in the idiom of his own people: that also erudite and elegant: and not deviating so much from my own sense and thoughts: indeed in most [matters] striking the same point of truth with me, because they had been drawn from the same fountain of truth, when, though at different times and in places separated by a great interval, we were both applying ourselves to exploring the same thing.
