THERE has come to me in these days a
little book by Simon Budny, inscribed to your
name, most illustrious and magnificent lord, in
which he attempts to strike at me through the side
of Stanislaus Grochouius, and to overturn the true and
sound doctrine concerning the two natures of Christ
our Savior. By this writing, he imposes upon me the
same necessity of writing, which he complains, I
know not how truly, was imposed upon him by others
against his will. Since he brings me into the contest
by name, I did not wish to abandon the defense of
the truth once undertaken by me, nor did I think it
permissible for me to remain silent regarding such great
blasphemies of his, or by silence to approve them or
at least dissimulate them. But because he dared,
magnificent hero, to inscribe to your most famous name
this book in which he attacks the deity of Christ our
Redeemer, I also wished to offer my response to your
Magnificence, by which the divine nature and glory of
Christ is asserted. And indeed, he did nothing more
right in the whole book than when he asserts that your
