XXXVIII.
Why is it not fitting to cough repeatedly while speaking? Because that gesture is typical of liars, and of those composing what they are to say while speaking.

To whom is it fitting to swallow saliva? To the unrefined, who represent the dog returning to its vomit, or the pig to its wallowing in the mud.

Why is it not fitting, in the manner of some, to belch at every third word? Surely because it is an indecorous thing, which, if it has become a habit from a tender age, will likely persist into a more advanced age.

What decorum is to be observed when coughing? That we do not cough into anyone's face, and that we do not try to cough more loudly than nature requires.
XLII.
Is vomiting shameful? It is most shameful and most foul when brought on by gluttony. But if you are relieving a necessity of nature, it is considered worthy of pardon.
