they imposed, by which they might partly express orthodox truth clearly, and partly refute, uncover, and indeed exclude the wiles and malicious arts of the heretics. Whence also Augustine, in his seventh book On the Trinity, chapter 4, says: "For this reason, because of the necessity of speaking and disputing, it was permitted to say three Persons; not because Scripture speaks in these words, but because Scripture does not contradict them."
But because these Servetians Followers of Michael Servetus, a Spanish physician and theologian executed for heresy regarding the Trinity., having now emerged for the first time in these regions of ours, do not cease to spread their dreams, and entice the unskilled with their lying doctrine, I have deemed it necessary to discourse briefly on these names concerning which there is contention, to open the origin of the terms, and to assert the orthodox sentiment regarding the three Persons, lest this evil spread more widely.
