which possess I know not what mixture and intermediate state, in which they might differ from the pure deity, such as the Son and the Spirit. That this is the Trinity: that the deity which is in the Father has been communicated to Christ, and then through that mediator to the Apostles through the Spirit. Thus, from a Triad a fifteen-fold group would be made. They also teach that there is an implication of contradiction and an assertion of a quaternity meaning the belief in four divine beings rather than three, to confess God Jehovah as one, and yet to claim that the triune God is the supreme unity, and that He can neither be increased or diminished, nor divided, nor receive the condition of prior or posterior.
Indeed, they compare the most holy Trinity to the hydra, Geryon, Briareus, and the infernal Cerberus; they are truly worthy to be torn by the hellish furies and thrown to be devoured by Cerberus. But we do not say that the Father is God, the Son is God, and the Holy Spirit is God in such a way that there is a division of the divine substance among them, but we confess one God in supreme simplicity, proclaimed in the Scriptures only by personal distinction. For the Holy Letters proclaim the Word, or the virtue of God, as Paul calls it, as well as the Spirit and the breath of God that quickens and adorns all things. Now, who would make the Word and the Spirit of God different from God the Father?
