Again, when Scripture speaks of these things under distinct persons, who will correct the tongue of God? It will therefore be the mark of a pious heart to acknowledge that the Word was with God in the beginning, in such a way that it simultaneously acknowledges that the Word Himself is God. Thus, one confesses that the Paraclete The Holy Spirit, who teaches and perfects all things, proceeds from the Father and the Son, yet remains in nature and substance the same God Himself. For it belongs to God alone to teach and restore all things.
SECOND: That there is a plurality in the unity of the Divine essence, and that this plurality is the Trinity, and the Trinity is its unity, is proven:
1. By the manner and form of Baptism. Matthew, at the end: Baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. For here, just as the individual persons are expressed singularly, so the divinity of all of them, the same and common, is taught singularly in this: that He commands to be baptized not only in the name of the Father, but also of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. But Paul denies that anyone is to be baptized in the name of any man who is nothing more than a man. Was I, he says, baptized in the name of Paul? Therefore, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, in whose name we are baptized, are God. From this, we see that God is not rightly known unless He is known distinctly.
