6. From the most proper name of God, Jehovah. Indeed, just as we cannot have any knowledge of the substance of God, so we cannot have knowledge of the name of God. Nevertheless, the name of four letters is more peculiar to His operations, and shows a more perfect knowledge of Him, as far as it is possible for us to grasp. This name Jehovah is not pronounced by the Hebrews, nor was it spoken except in the sanctuary by the Priests of the Lord, and only in the blessing of the priests by the High Priest on the great day of the fast of sanctification. And note that although the letters of this name are four in number, yet they are only three: Iod, He, Vau. Therefore, the three letters of this name designate the three divine hypostases subsistences/persons. For the first, namely Iod, which is interpreted as the beginning, in that it is the beginning of all other letters, and each letter has the origin of its writing from it, and it itself takes origin from no one, most correctly insinuates the Father in the divine, who, since He is from no one, and others flow from Him, is called the beginning without a beginning. The second letter He, which signifies to be or to live, most openly indicates the Son in the divine, through whom all things that were made began to be and to live. The third
