I do not teach with much display original: "οὐ μετὰ πολλῆς φαντασίας", yet I do so sincerely and faithfully: piously indeed, and in the fear of God, and with reverence and trembling before such great mysteries. I am well aware before God and the holy Angels that I have aimed at the correct method of building faith and have discussed sacred matters strictly and accurately. I do not do the former, not only because, however much I might wish, I cannot: but because it is certainly not fitting, and even if I were able, I would not want to, since it is neither permitted nor expedient. For if a solid, moderate, calm, and sober action is praised in the professors, doctors, and masters of other sciences: it is certainly far less to be endured that such ostentation should be sought by the interpreters of the oracles of God themselves: and I consider it a kind of sacrilege for it to be sought and affected by them. When I speak of a solid and sober method of teaching, I do not approve of one that is hollow, languid, dry, or rugged: but I require one that breathes the Spirit of God himself, tastes only of Christ, and looks simply and ingenuously to the salvation of souls.
