Frischlin, Nicodemus · 1577

Just as hunters wander through forests, and rocks,
And through wild beasts they often follow a rigid path:
Yet the labor is also much the most grateful:
While the sought-after prey comes into eager hands:
So also you were a hunter in a various way:
And first of your grove, Philosophy.
What prey was given to you: the rich doctrine of the Wise:
Which the forest of speaking is wont to give richly.
Furthermore, what have you gained, having followed the camps of the Muses,
And hunted in your places, Swabian Tübingen:
A noble, distinguished, most beautiful, by name FELIX referring to his wife's name, meaning "Happy",
A hind sought has fallen into your nets.
A hind indeed such as the songs of Solomon praise:
It is a wild beast captured for you having nothing of wildness.
And as the hind suckles her offspring under a shady oak
Through the summer (a sweet thing to see) days:
So your hind sitting at the arms of her OAK
Offers pleasant udders to her offspring.
Furthermore, what have you obtained in the dark forests of Law:
Beasts pleasing to Princes, and to empires.
The prudence of grave matters investigated for you
Happened, for the goodness of your genius.
It happened, the true skill of countless cases for you:
This, by your help, by your cause, stands, that falls, by your own.
You know how to properly resolve the twisted knots:
You know how to replicate men for the implicated.
As hardly any wild beast escapes the skilled hunter:
So also hardly any case escapes your mind.
Therefore whether the public matter may desire to use you:
Or any Prince may seek your help:
