The former part of the cure is to be drawn from the particular Method, which treats of each of these diseases privately: the latter is accomplished by Diet and Pharmacy.

The entire plan of food, if you consider the fever and emaciation, should be moistening and cooling and analēptikē restorative: but if you are intent on the ulcer, the cause properly called phthisis, a dry one shall be prescribed: and thus, with the indications always changed, taken from the species or idea of the disease, the species of remedies must also be changed.

In choosing the air, diligent care must be applied first of all, since it alters the lungs most effectively and exists as their principal food.
XLII.
Therefore, that which has its origin from burning and hectic fevers, yet without any ulceration of the lung, requires moist and cold air.
XLIII.
But that which has grown from an ulcer of the lung demands dry air, which is temperate in its active qualities, unless perhaps an opposing indication from a fever prevails. For this reason, Galen used to send consumptives to Stabiae, where the air was drier. And many authors of no obscure name have reported that a voyage to the island of Cyprus was beneficial.
XLIV.
In general, however, the consumptive shall avoid every excess in heat and cold, such as Northern and Southern winds, and all sudden changes of air and weather.
XLV.
The foods should be euchymoi good-juiced/nutritious, dyspeptoi easy to digest, polytrophoi highly nourishing, analogoi kai dymetablētoi proportional and not easily changed, and in general, especially when phthisis is becoming chronic, analēptikoi restorative: also, because of the fever, they should be somewhat cooling and moistening. To these should be mixed those things which, according to the time of the disease, are suitable for the ulcer, at other times
