they soothe, soften, and promote coughing, so that the sanious and purulent filth that emanates from the ulcer may be cast out. For if sputum is retained, Hippocrates predicts they will die.
LXVI.
For this use, hydromel, barley groats and their cream, a decoction of barley, flax seed, and fenugreek (washed several times), seasoned with sugar and honey, are employed: Turpentine, resinous pine nuts, red chickpeas, Birthwort, leek, squill, scabious, Hyssop, Coltsfoot, Elecampane, Illyrian Iris, Maidenhair, Licorice, etc. Compounds: Syrup of Horehound, Syrup of Hyssop, Syrup of Licorice, Syrup of Coltsfoot, Jujube syrup, Violet syrup, etc. Loch electuary of stalks, Loch of poppy, of fox lungs, of pine, healthy Loch, Loch of Coltsfoot, Loch of purslane, etc.
LXVII.
Great caution, however, must be applied, lest by cleansing unseasonably we make the ulcer deeper than it was and incite lethal rejection of blood.
LXVIII.
Once the lung is cleansed, we must insist upon gluing and consolidation: for this use, Rose Sugar is magnificently commended by physicians, which possesses the faculty of gluing if it is old, and of cleansing if it is fresh. Also, sugar of Comfrey, Maidenhair, etc. Burnt milk with starch, fine flour, Tragacanth, Gum Arabic, Frankincense, Mastic, Amber, Coral, Roses, Balaustine, Myrtle, Hypocistis, Syrian Sumac, Armenian Bole, Sealed Earth, crayfish shells, Dragon's blood, etc. Complete syrup of roses, Myrtle syrup, Pomegranate syrup, Quince marmalade.
LXIX.
Here also, one must attend studiously, lest we hasten to glue filthy and impure ulcers with styptics, whereby the neighboring parts also are exacerbated and eroded.
LXX.
In the process of the disease, when the ulcer is entirely purged, medicines that are vehemently drying are also used, which by their own power penetrate even to the most remote parts, among whose class are Theriac, Mithridatium, and Athanasia.
