MARRIAGE OF THE MOST FAMOUS AND MOST RESPECTED MAN,
Dr. SAMUEL GRYNAEUS, most learned Doctor of Civil Law: and his Bride, ANNA: whose wedding was celebrated on the 10th day before the Kalends of October, in Basel of the Rauraci: in this year of the birth of Christ, 1578.
An introduction born from the event itself, and deduced from the present state of affairs.
The time is here, in which the joyful vintner gathers sweet grapes: and must flows under the pressed foot. The winepresses creak: and the foaming jars receive the new nectar: for your harvest, Bacchus, is now wet. Now autumn sets forth various fruits: and the wild plowman gathers riches from the high trees. The cunning fowler strives to catch fat birds with nets: and with sticky birdlime. And now the late-blooming Narcissus is accustomed to have withered in the mown meadows with its final flower. From our mountains, the unknown swallow departs: and the Strymonian cranes fly to new realms. Little by little, you might see the green woods turn pale: and the leaves fall from the trees, damaged by the cold. Winter will soon follow autumn, once it is driven off: and will feed the eager swine with the falling acorns. Which the rustic youth, and the citizen, slaughter: so that, indulging their genius, they may devour the rich dishes with a voice.
