That is, a method in which solid doctrine is delivered with great reverence for the truth itself, with all curiosity and vain babbling—as Paul says—removed. Therefore, if anyone has been diligently occupied with the Prophetic and Apostolic writings, it seems to me that he can most easily grasp what the true method of teaching Sacred Scripture is. For he will hand down holy things, and he will do so holily. Finally, he will perform that which is the entire duty of the best Pastor or Teacher: to teach the way of God in truth. Therefore, he will neither be insane about questions and disputes of words, nor will he introduce those discussions or exercises that Paul calls perverse, or belonging to men of corrupt mind—that is, those who count piety as a means of gain, or who capture and hunt for a flock of disciples, and finally, who boast in the flesh. In sum, as the same Paul says, the best doctor and interpreter of Sacred Scripture will both exhort through sound doctrine and convict those who contradict. In these two things, and indeed in this order, that supreme theologian Paul briefly encompassed the entire explanation of this method that you seek. Concerning this very thing, I now complain gravely (even though almost fifty-four years have passed since the time when, first by the highest benefit of God the Best and Greatest, the pure light and doctrine of the Gospel was restored to the world).
