...with whom we associate assiduously. But since they do not seem so much to demonstrate a πάντων universal, that is, a certain general reason in every part of Scripture, as they seem to have turned their thoughts to τῶν particular, that is, to a certain hypothesis and to only one part of Scripture which they had undertaken to treat, this labor of ours will perhaps not be fruitless. For you ask for that general method which you can apply to any part of Scripture, not only to a verse; which I briefly explain to you, based only on my own custom. And because, when you were with me, you had joined in the same volume N. Hemmingsen’s little book, to which he gave the name Pastor, and another little work by A. Hyperius, which he inscribed On Theological Study, take care to add this work of ours as well, such as it is, because it is sent to you: so that after you have learned from Hemmingsen what the life and manners of a faithful minister of the word of God and a true pastor of the Church of God ought to be; and after you have known from Hyperius, that never sufficiently praised theologian, what the true and useful method of pursuing theological study is, you may understand from our own pamphlet what the method is for treating and explaining Sacred Scripture itself, compared with that long and theological study. For from those three joined together, you will now be able both to live holily, and to apply yourself to the Holy Scriptures with fruit, and finally, what you have once learned, you will be able, with the Lord giving, to teach usefully to others.
