Finally, as Cicero says in book 1 of De Legibus On Laws, where is that established friendship if the friend himself is not loved for his own sake, with one's whole heart, as it is said?
There are three primary effects of true friendship: Mutual love in God, Holy consensus of souls, and Mutual preservation and protection to the best of one's ability.
And love, indeed, is an affection of the heart by which we love one person above all others and follow him specially, wishing and desiring well for him.
