ILLUSTRIOUS AND IN DOMESTIC
Nobility, to the most splendid man, Lord Odoardus Thyenaeus, Count of Ciconia, his honorable Lord. Greetings.
Large ornamental drop cap 'A' featuring floral and foliate scrollwork.I bring to you, illustrious and generous
man, a small gift, such as ours usually are, that is to say, made of paper and thin.
Since you, in loving and honoring me, have
neglected no sort of service, I wished at least,
by this slight little work, to provide a sign
of a grateful spirit, since no other way has been opened to me. And although it is of such a
kind that it can neither be recommended, especially to such a great
man, nor contribute anything to the dignity and splendor of
your virtues, yet, such is your candor and zeal toward me, I hope
you will receive this small guest with a grateful spirit, and will allow
it to appear more adorned and recommended by the splendor of your name.
May the Lord Jesus preserve you with all your family.
Amen. Farewell, at Bern, the first of February, 1574.
