AUTHOR OF THE EPISTLE
James, who is the author of the present epistle, was of the number of the twelve Apostles. For the Greeks expressly add Ἀποστόλου Apostle, and the Syrians, who soon after the times of the Apostles translated the Gospel of Christ and these epistles, which we call canonical, together with others into their own language, acknowledge James as an Apostle. However, because in Matthew chapter 10 two Jameses are recounted in the catalog of the Apostles, it can be asked not without reason, who he might be: whether the son of Zebedee or of Alphaeus. In the decision of this question, I follow the opinion of Jerome, who declares him to be the son of Alphaeus, and the same person who is called James the Less, James the Just, James the brother of Jude, and James the brother of the Lord.
