TO THE MOST AUGUST AND MOST DISTINGUISHED MAN, DOMINIC IOHANNES DORRIUS, Doctor of both Laws, and most vigilant Consul of the famous Republic of Deventer, my kinsman and revered patron, greetings.
When I saw that many candidates were frequenting this place to dedicate their theses to some patron who would undertake their sponsorship, most distinguished Doctor, much-revered kinsman, I thought this custom should be followed by me above all. For when I noticed that my theses would be exposed to the envy and criticism of many, as I had undertaken to defend several conclusions against the common opinion of the Doctors, I had to seek some distinguished patron who would vindicate them from the whispers of the envious. Nor should one judge by the multitude of authors, for that which is better and more equitable is not always the consensus: as it is possible that a person of inferior opinion may surpass many others in some regard. Therefore, I have considered you above others, observant kinsman, to whose patronage I might entrust my theses: for since you are most cultivated in the knowledge of the law and in long experience of forensic matters, you will easily perceive, through the dexterity of your judgment and wit, that I have asserted nothing foreign to the truth and the doctrine of the law, and thus you will not unwillingly sponsor my cause. The other and most important reason why I wanted to inscribe these theses to you was this, that some testimony of my benevolence and gratitude toward you might exist. For I must be especially grateful to you if I have progressed in any way in the study of Law, as I have used you especially as a consultant and guide. In this vast sea of law, you showed me a certain path, guided by which as if by a most certain thread, I directed the course of my studies toward the goal; for which reason I willingly acknowledge that I and all my belongings owe everything to you; meanwhile, until I can offer greater things, accept this gift with a kindly face. Farewell, and hold me recommended to you.
Given at Basel of the Rauraci the Roman name for the region of Basel, July 25, in the year of restored salvation 1579.
