But he either considers you to be trunks and stumps, who would tolerate for so long such bitter things for a doctrine unknown to you, and not at all weighed according to the standard of the Divine Word, as if upon a fair scale: or if he deems you pious and prudent, he certainly should have thought well of you, and should have considered that you had Acts 17, John 5 accurately done what is written of the Beroeans and Thessalonians, namely, that you would search the scriptures and diligently compare our doctrine with them. But that, brothers, you both have done and are doing by the grace of God, and therefore you are confirmed day by day more and more by the Spirit of God in that doctrine which you have received from us. Furthermore, when this man so proudly treats all the Pastors of the Gallican Churches as one, whitewashing them like walls, and condemning them—immortal God, how many and how great men, how many faithful servants of God, how many holy martyrs of Christ does he condemn? For there is one voice and doctrine, and one confession of faith for all Gallican Pastors: which all who have heard us know. Therefore, he who pronounces the doctrine of our Churches not sincere, not true, and not consenting to the word of God, calumniously calls all those lights of the world heretics, impostors, and false teachers.
