This, therefore, is the true disposition of Osiander (who attempts to ensnare you with this bait of words), this is his charity, this is his sincere love, that he does not fear to excite the fires of the most savage persecutions and flames against you. But this man, now sewing a fox’s skin onto the lion’s skin (which he was wearing recently in his work entitled Antisturmius), and leading you away from the true doctrine of faith if he can, prefaces much about his own spirit toward you, and speaks and sounds nothing but bland words, the duty of his piety, his study for your eternal salvation, and finally, public and private prayers to God for your safety. Thus, those who lead foolish women captive under the specious pretext of charity and eternal salvation first creep in to them, as Paul teaches. But so that you may better perceive the whole genius and artifice of this man, dearest brothers, I will briefly explain with what cunning he wished not so much to propose his doctrine to you as to dissimulate it, and not so much to explain as to hide it, so that he offers in appearance bread or a fish, but in reality a stone or a serpent. From that you understand that all those things regarding his affection toward you are feigned, and that he does not deal with you candidly and with such words as he is accustomed to speak elsewhere; not that he has changed his sentiment regarding the Ubiquity omnipresence of the flesh of Christ in these lands, but because, by concealing that (which appears false even to those looking at it at first glance), he thinks you will more easily agree with him.
