20. Galen himself admits in six hundred places that the veins possess a blood-making power αἱματοποιήτιν, whatever else he might establish as little consistent in that matter.
21. However, blood-making αἱματοποίησις is perfected not by the heat of the heart flowing alone, which nevertheless is stronger in the solid than in the fleshy parts: but also by an innate power and faculty of the veins, which Galen expressly admits in Book 4 On the Use of Parts, chapters 2 and 12, that they cook with their own temperament and heat.
22. Redness is an accident in blood, and not of the definition of its substance: but it follows either cooking due to the liquid matter, which takes on various colors according to various cooking, or it is acquired from the parenchyma itself: whence it can also be washed away by lotion, just as experience declares this sufficiently.
23. A secondary humor is blood so elaborated by many cookings that it can conveniently nourish the parts: This is called by Hippocrates that which is like food οἷον τροφή.
24. Avicenna established four secondary humors: the Innominatum unnamed, the Dew, the Gluten, and the Cambium: But if we examine the matter more deeply, only two seem to be established, namely, that which flows into the parts like dew, and that which is attached to it.
25. For that first one, which they call Innominatum, should not be considered a secondary humor: Although it is contained in smaller vessels and divided to the minimum, and is somewhat changed by the contact of the surrounding parts, it is nevertheless still in the veins and has not yet completely departed from the definition of blood.
26. But the fourth, since it has already been assimilated to the particle itself according to temperament and substance, can no longer be called a humor.
