IN every substantial essential/fundamental mutation and generation (to which we also refer pepsin digestion along with Aristotle in Meteorology book 4 and Galen in On the Natural Faculties book 1), it is necessary that the pneumatica spirituous/vital elements remain; we are taught this by the fact that no thing is generated from the entirety of a thing meaning: the whole substance is not consumed/transformed at once.
Of these, according to the opinion of Galen in his book on the science of smell, some are thicker, others thinner.
Hence, in the third coction digestion, as the physicians call it, a twofold excrement is separated: one thinner, which is purged through diapnoen insensible perspiration by way of exhalation original: "ἀναθυμίασις" - evaporation/fumes: the other thicker, which is purged through the pores in the form of water, as Hippocrates testifies in his book on diseases.
Galen writes in On the Natural Faculties book 3, chapter 12, that if these excrements remain in the body for too long and are not duly expelled, they corrupt. Whence comes miansis pollution/contamination and sepsis putrefaction of the nourishment: since the new anathymiasis evaporation/vital fume cannot be supplied to the innate heat as fuel.
We shall now discuss sweat, which is of the greatest moment, not only for the health of the sick, but also for securing the reputation of the physician; as is clearer than the midday sun from the books of Hippocrates’ Prognostics, and Galen’s On the Faculties of Simple Medicines book 10, and On the Preservation of Health book 4.
SWEAT (called hidros sweat by the Greeks), is nothing other than an ichorous serous/thin fluid humor in the veins and arteries, attenuated by the power of heat, and led out from them—by the agency of that same heat—through the habit of the body.
