it will require five therapeutic goals: 1. The goal will be the soothing of the belly, 2. Preparation of the humors, 3. Evacuation, 4. Resolution of the residue, and 5. Strengthening of the parts.
XL.
The first goal will be fulfilled with soothing agents, either by clyster, by vomiting, or by medicines. For clysters, we will first use emollient agents, or those made from only oil and butter, gradually transitioning to sharper ones, with the addition of Indian Electuary, Hiera Logodion, and Benedicta Laxativa with warmer oils. Or, suppositories shall be prepared according to the decree of Paulus, milder at first, and later stronger, made from Hellebore, Colocynth, Scammony, and Troches of Alhandal. We shall provoke vomiting with convenient agents, such as the juice of Radish, or the seed of the same with wine, or Oxymel with a decoction of Dill seeds. In drink, however, it will be most excellent to exhibit sweet oil, or oil of sweet Almonds.
XLI.
Digestion or preparation is for cold and thick humor: hence, they are to be attenuated, warmed, and dried. This shall be done with Syrup of two roots, Bysantine, simple Oxymel, or a decoction prepared with some convenient agent made from warmer substances and adding some syrups.
XLII.
Evacuation, however, once the humor is prepared, will be accomplished with lighter pills, such as those made from Hiera of Galen with wine. Stronger will be the foetid pills, Iliac pills of Almansor, those of Sagapenum, Agaric, or Cochia. Or, we shall use potions or convenient cathartic syrups. Diaphænicum is wonderfully recommended, along with Diacatholicon and the spices of Hiera.
XLIII.
The resolution of the residue itself is done with warm oils in which Cumin, Fennel, Southernwood, and Pennyroyal have been decocted. Or with warm electuaries, such as Electuary of Laurel Berries, Diamoschu, Diacyminum, Diagalanthum, and Aromatic Rosatum. Or we infuse oil of Rue with Cretan wine.
