and the firmament announces the work of thy hands. Thus Isaiah: Lift up your eyes on high, and see who created these: who brings out their host by number, and calls them all by name, because of the greatness of His might and power, and not one was missing. By these things, we are not only stirred to praise God, but the subject matter is also prescribed, by which the ineffable works and wonders of Divine Majesty are shown, which, since they revolve before our eyes daily, can never fail to carry us into admiration of God. For if we look to the heaven with the mouth (which God gave us sublime, while other animals look down at the ground) and lift our faces erected toward the stars, what wisdom, what omnipotence, and what works of the goodness of God do we behold? The brilliance of the Sun, the greatest luminary, is so great, joined with heat, that it makes the day for the whole world, nor is there any who can hide himself from its heat. We see it like a giant exulting to run its course, whose rising is from the ends of the heavens Psal: 19. We see it like the ruler of the world returning at stated times, distinguishing the day from the night-time spaces, and summer from winter. We see the other great luminary, the Moon, clothed in various forms of light, serving the night and the months. What a pleasant variety of other stars is observed? Here the twinkling stars of the Pleiades, there the Hyades, here Orion, there Arcturus, and who could enumerate the whole ornament of the celestial host, whose multitude God counts and calls them all by their names Psal: 146? But if you descend to the science that revolves around these, what divine equality and perfection of motions is found there, which have never begun to falter since the world was founded? The whole heaven venerates and observes the Sun as its King, as if receiving the laws of motions prescribed by Him. We discover the immense altitude of the heavens; we perceive the incredible magnitude of the Sun. But if I were to enumerate these things, paper would run out before the subject matter of speaking. Who established this ornament? Who fashioned this great machine of the universe? God. Job 9: He commands the Sun and it does not rise, He alone stretches out the heavens, He makes Arcturus and Orion and the Hyades, and the secret places of the south; He does great and incomprehensible and wonderful things.
