ready: but the latter things showed the matter to be in earnest, their spears drenched in blood and vomiting fire.
In the same year, on the vigil of John the Evangelist, the sky was again seen burning, from which a great concourse of people arose here and there, who thought that neighboring places were blazing with a great fire.
Likewise, on the 16th day of February of this current year, 1581, around the evening twilight, I again saw toward the north, near the North-West, some spears sweating much blood, which, raised on high and gradually dilated, receded into the west; from there, a similar Chasma gaping chasm of purple clouds arose and proceeded along the same path, and when it reached the Master wind the West-North-West wind, it was extinguished. Once that was dissipated, white spicula emerged with great speed toward the east from the North-East, by which the whole north was so illuminated that in the middle of the night all things on the mountain peaks, the thickets, and trees could be seen with as much clarity as at the rising of the full moon. This entire Chasma gaping chasm was observed for over half an hour.
A halo around the Sun.
On the following day, a halo of enormous size encircled the Sun; around the 10th hour of the day, it rendered all the colors of the rainbow, though somewhat darker. I measured its diameter and found it to be no less than 45 degrees.
Although so many and such great portents are heeded by few—for the daily occurrence becomes cheap—it is to be feared, and there is no doubt, that the events of which they depict the figures will be known to us with great evil and our mourning not much later than we might wish, unless we turn away the divine wrath with ardent prayers and the sanctity of our lives.
