continues from previous page: that heavenly doctrine of Paul, that we are justified by faith alone, this also will necessarily remain true and constant, that by faith alone Christ is received by us: who is our justice, according to Romans 4. Furthermore, when he says he is astonished, observe how frail, inconstant, and fickle we are by nature. Let us see examples. While Moses waits, they cast a calf; Aaron also is fickle and weak. They shout to Christ, Hosanna to the Son of David, yet a little later, when they saw the lords, priests, and elders of the people persecuting Christ, they shouted, Crucify him. Likewise, His blood be upon us. In short, if a man is weighed with vanity, he will be vainer than vanity itself: and if even the smallest cross came to us, many would doubt the truth of the Gospel: especially hypocrites, who await an opportunity to defect; and each of them wants to be seen as a prophet. In 2 Thessalonians chapter 2, it is taught that most do not have a love of the truth so that they may be saved, and therefore the Lord sends an efficacy of error. Therefore, since the world wishes to be deceived, upon the arrival of the cross, they affirm that they were prophets, and say: Did I not say well that things would not succeed? That those who confess this doctrine would not be borne at all? Did it not happen? But what has happened? Is it not this very thing that Christ predicted: They will think they are performing a service to God when they kill you: You will be hated by all because of my name? Among other things, Christ predicts, Many will fall away from the truth. But whoever endures to the end will be saved. If those things which Christ predicted did not come to pass, then one would have to doubt the Gospel.
8 But even if we, or an Angel from heaven, should preach the Gospel
