of His will from the written Word, the matter must be committed to execution, and the event must be entrusted to Him. On the contrary, before we consult the mouth of the Lord and His Word, we ask, What seems good to you and to your flesh and blood?

In persecution, you will perhaps consult with friends; they will advise that you take pity on your children, parents, and wife, so that you may therefore deny the truth of God and remain. A dangerous consultation. For in it:

Eternal life and hell contend with each other. original: "Streittet euviges leben undt die hell miteinander."

And indeed, it is a wicked temptation of God. For it is a crime to subject God to human counsels. Christ teaches far otherwise in Luke 9: No one who has once put his hand to the plow and looks back, and consults with flesh and blood, is fit for the kingdom of God.

For just as one who holds the plow and looks back cannot plow straight, so also are those who weigh their friends, wife, and home.

The companions of Daniel were otherwise. They do not consult among themselves about abnegation: Know, O King, that we will not adore your gods, Daniel 3.

Cyprian was otherwise, who, when offered a delay to deliberate by the judge, responded: One must not deliberate on so holy a matter. He considered it a crime and an evil to deliberate whether he should stand firm in the heavenly truth. Therefore, let us trust by denying ourselves.
