SINCE I see that it is the custom in this renowned Academy, most noble young men, that the Theses which are publicly proposed for obtaining a degree are published under some patronage, it seemed appropriate to me—now that I must hold a public disputation for the degree of Doctor of both Laws, by decree of the most illustrious Order of Jurisconsults of Basel—to dedicate these Theses to you, as a mnemosynon memorial of my love for you. By this, I not only confirm the opinion you have formed regarding my zeal and faithfulness toward you, but I also encourage you as you press forward in that distinguished study of virtue and the Laws to which you are dedicated. At the same time, I would place before your eyes the virtues of your most illustrious family, in which (not to mention your energetic and most noble guardians, Lord Servatius von Neydegg in Rastenburg and Vuildegg, and Lord Maximilian von Mämming in Kirchperg & Sitzenthal at Puëlach, most prudent councilors of the Imperial Majesty) you saw your father, Wilhelm, a hero of pious memory
