ALTHOUGH this Epistle, so illustrious among the others of Paul, has been explained so diligently and accurately by the rightful commentaries of other most learned men that hardly any passage remains in it whose difficulty would justly delay the reader: nevertheless, having obtained your notes on it, I thought they were worthy to be published for the public. For I see that you have followed a brevity in them in which clarity cannot be missed: and besides the fact that you hit the mark in the explanation of the meaning itself, you have used such selection and judgment in observing the commonplaces, as our people call them, that you have brought in nothing that would lead anyone far from the mark, nor have you easily annotated anything that is not in its proper place. Therefore, I do not only not reproach your brevity, but I even consider it worthy of commendation, also being, as I hope, of great assistance to those who, moving about in the more copious writings of others as if in a deep sea, will have this as a kind of Cynosura a constellation or guide to direct the course of their reading: and if this had been observed by some in reading the writings of both ancient and recent theologians, they would not have so often cast themselves and too many others headlong into such dangerous rocks of errors and even blasphemies.
