It is frivolous, however, that the Jews contend that the word אלהים Elohim does not imply multiple persons, but is used in the plural number because it lacks a singular number.

For it descends from the singular אלוה Eloah, which is customary in Scripture, and furthermore, a word or epithet of multitude is often added to the word אלהים, just as it is said in Gen. 1: ויאמר אלהים נעשה אדם בצלמנו כדמותנו And Elohim (the Gods) said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness.

But that the Jews cavil here that God was addressing angels, this invention is refuted by Moses himself, who immediately adds: And God created man in h i s own image: where he explains the word o u r, likewise l e t u s m a k e, saying: In the image of God h e created him.

Furthermore, in creation, no one was an advisor to God, from which He proves His divinity, therefore He does not share the honor of creating with any creature: I am Jehovah, He says, making all things, stretching out the heavens alone, establishing the earth by Myself.

A similar testimony is Deut. 5: כי מי כל בשר אשר שמע קול אלהים חיים מדבר מתוך האש כמונו ויחי For what is all flesh that has heard the voice of the living Gods speaking from the midst of the fire, as we have, and lived?

XXXIII.

The same is taught no less evidently in Joshua 24, where Joshua addresses the people thus: לא תוכלו לעבוד את יהוה כי אלהים קדשים הוא You cannot serve Jehovah, because He is holy Gods. Where, to the word אלהים, which is by itself of plural number, another of the same number, קדשים, is applied, which not obscurely shows the Trinity of persons. But the added singular pronoun (הוא) indicates the unity of essence.

XXXIV.

Concerning the subversion of Sodom, we read it written thus in Gen. 19: ויהוה המטיר על סדום ועל עמרה גפרית ואש מאת יהוה מן השמים And Jehovah rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah sulfur and fire from Jehovah from the heavens.
