moderate, so they do not congest the head. For this same reason, friction massage should be applied to the head only in moderation. Sleep, especially during the day, should be avoided, and at night it should be moderate. Evacuations of the bowels should occur either through art or nature. Worries, fears, and other passions of the mind should be avoided entirely.
After the diet is established, the body must be purged, not just once, but frequently, so that the vicious humors are expelled as much as possible. In this matter, one must be careful not to evacuate too much at one time, nor to use overly strong drugs in the beginning, but rather to attempt to expel the harmful substances at intervals, while always considering the constitution of the body and other circumstances.
Once these things have been correctly performed, one must come to external and so-called topical remedies, by which we may partly avert or revoke vapors from the head, and partly strengthen and correct both the brain itself and other parts.
But if we achieve little by these means, we shall stimulate a cautery with a red-hot iron or with a caustic medicine made from cantharides dried blister beetles, yeast, and vinegar at the coronal suture, if such poisonous vapors are generated in the head. The aforementioned cauteries will also have a place on the parts below, from which such vapors ascend.
