V.
Therefore, moved by the arguments and phainomenois phenomena/observed facts brought forward by Galen in book 5 of original: "de locis affectis" On Affected Parts, chapter 6, and elsewhere, we shall show how a cold affection is the cause of that swelling.
VI.
Moreover, just as in other parts no tumor is visible, so the belly is not filled and distended by a hydropic swelling if the first digestion is carried out in the stomach, and if the physikon kai oikeion thermon natural and inherent heat, which is the cause of all digestion, behaves naturally. For then good and praiseworthy blood is generated, which, diffused through the veins into the entire habit of the body, becomes suitable nourishment for the parts, and is applied, agglutinated, and perfectly assimilated in them during nutrition.
VII.
But when the heat of the liver is gravely diminished and weakened for any reason, cruder and colder blood is generated. Because it is not attracted by the parts to be nourished due to its unfitness, it is left stagnating in the belly. Even the remaining parts appear swollen and inflated like oedema a swelling caused by fluid from the portion of that crude humor still flowing about, since they are not truly nourished by that humor.
IIX.
Thus, dropsy is generated, which is a cold affection of the liver, succeeding the heat when it is displaced, whenever the duty of blood-making fails due to a defect of the liver. According to the quality and diversity of the coldness creating this affection, three species of dropsy exist and flourish, distinguished by place and matter: namely hydor water-dropsy, tympanitas tympanic dropsy/bloating, ascites dropsy of the abdomen, and sarkites fleshy dropsy.
IX.
For if the heat is weak in a part, crude ventosity flatulence is generated.
