Diseases from those who study with a vigilant genius.
When the conscious mind also knows that medical
Arts are mine, now fame will fly splendidly through the
Whole world, because medicines,
And wholesome herbs, and at the same time the learned craftsman
Who brings the Paeonian cup,
All come under our power:
It befits us to decorate likewise with a distinguished
Diadem the camp of those who follow us.
If anyone has well received magnificent praises,
Whether he shall be a victor with a swift foot,
Or in doubtful battle, or if he has strenuously
Checked his horses with his hands, or has attempted
To run with swift wheels. Also the Pancratius an ancient contest of boxing and wrestling,
The boxer and the runner, and then at the same time the jumper.
If they carry off a name clearer than gold:
These rewards of deserved laurel will come just as
Much more justly to those whose virtue it is clear
Has been poured out under the axis of the arts,
Whom the huge labor could not likewise,
From our studies, nor the arduous work,
Deter from greedily drawing the sacred draughts
From our fountains?
He who competes only with the strength of the body,
Or the dexterity of the hands, has not deserved the titles
So justly, nor does the Pentathlus a five-fold athlete
Obtain them, nor the Gymnicus gymnast/athlete,
As he who follows us and ours diligently,
And who adorns his mind with the sciences of doctrine,
Not without composed morals.
Therefore this youth, whom you see instructed
In all the liberal arts at once:
Whom you know how much he has endured
For the sake of medical science, while he desires with
Great study to know the dogmas of Hippocrates
