Ambühl, Rudolf · 1582

folio 9
A firm defense and protection in difficult matters,
Which is a sublime honor when the swelling wind
Drives your sails on a prosperous course:
You will despise the threads of pitiless Lachesis the Fate who determines the length of life
And the poison of Nemesis the goddess of retribution. You will not fear the
Horrid mouths of barking Cerberus the hound of the underworld,
Nor will you fear the realms of cruel Proserpina queen of the underworld.
Now you will be held as the most shining glory
Of your native race, O Andreas, and at the same time
The council will receive you with joyous applause:
The leaders of the Rhaetians will receive you: you will bring joy
To your parents and your kin.
Therefore I congratulate you on these joys from my heart,
And I give thanks to you for such a memorable
Name, which I pray may flourish forever,
And I ask that the King of Heaven may grant you such
Success that you may surpass Machaon a legendary healer and son of Asclepius in art,
And at the same time possess the years and ages of Nestor a king known for his longevity and wisdom.
At last, the long-awaited day has shone clearly for you,
O Ruinella, and the radiance of the dawn is here.
The Pierides the Muses, joined with the Gratiae the Graces, adorning a crown,
Place it upon your head, your highest glory.
Now, behold the rewards worthy of your virtue,
Contributed by the chorus poured out through Helicon the mountain sacred to the Muses.
And all those exhausted and endured labors
Make whatever honor you have now taste all the sweeter.
Although you have very famous ancestors, whom they say
Have held the highest offices with their own praise:
Although parents from a clear lineage may have fallen to you,
You, however, noble youth, do little of this,
Tu catchword: You
