and refers itself to His glory and kingdom: and therefore, it cannot be overturned by any machinations of corrupt men, nor by any frauds and attempts of wicked spirits. Human speeches very often borrow their credibility from the integrity of the one from whom they flow, although a notable weakness and depravity is often perceived in the children of men. Therefore, the word of God, which proceeds from the most holy throne of the Trinity, and is confirmed by wonderful signs through the Holy Spirit, is most full of divinity and faith. Whether you look at the Law, which was given through Moses, or gaze at the Grace of the Gospel, which was confirmed through Christ, each accommodates its origin, its progress, and its end to God the most holy author. That which was sanctioned by God himself on Mount Sinai, disposed through holy angels, and promulgated through Moses the herald and interpreter, cannot be denied or doubted to be divine and holy without blasphemy. But if it is indeed holy and divine, it is certainly perfect and by no means in need of the addition, subtraction, mutation, or any correction of the lie of men. The interpretation of the Gospel applied by Christ and the Apostles is based upon these oracles. The authority of this Gospel, which I speak of, ought to be no less among men than among the angels themselves. For this very thing was not only revealed to the Jews and the Gentiles by the Holy Spirit, but also brought down from heaven through Christ the only-begotten Son of God, who exists as the image of the Father and the splendor of glory Hebrews 1; Colossians 1. Moreover, we believe that those things which are brought down from heaven and proceed from God himself must be pronounced heavenly and divine, no less than we designate those things which are made or born from man as human and earthly. It is necessary that those things which have the Holy Spirit as their author, and which are able to sanctify man in the truth of God John 3; 14, 16, 17; Romans 1, be holy and spiritual. Likewise, that which has its origin from the spirit of truth embraces solid and perfect truth, and leads the erring man to Him who is the life, the way, and the truth. It also deserves to be called salutary because it can recreate man wounded by the stings of sins, and show itself to the believer as power unto eternal salvation Psalm 118; 1 Corinthians 1; Romans 1, 12. It is a heavenly lamp Hebrews 12; Colossians 1, under whose guidance the man endowed with faith enters the ways of God and eternal life. But whoever scorns this light and follows the counsel of his own reason is seduced into the dangerous labyrinths of unbelief and superstition, and cannot arrive at the holy mountain of God, nor the lot of the saints in light Genesis 1; Psalm 19; Matthew 5. God once placed the sun so that, like a great luminary, it might illuminate the whole circle of the earth with its rays and vivify terrestrial bodies with its heat. In the same way, He willed His word to stand forth like the brightest sun and to be placed in an elevated position, so that by its vivifying rays and heavenly splendor the minds of men might be illuminated unto eternal life. Furthermore, what is preached about the word of life and truth can be referred to the apostolic as well as the prophetic oracles: for they proceeded from the same author, the Holy Spirit, and tend to the same end and use. The Spirit of truth uses these as instruments and ministers in the building of the house
