if the right kidney is affected, it bothers the left; if the left, the right. Likewise, numbness of the thigh almost always occurs on the side of the affected kidney. For if numbness occupies the right thigh, the right kidney will be in a bad state; if the left, the left kidney.

To this point, Paul Paul of Aegina, Byzantine physician noted in book 3, chapter 45, that the right kidney is in distress if the right testicle is retracted, and the left if the left one is. Both happen (if we believe Galen, On Affected Parts, book 6, and the author of the book On the Diagnosis and Cure of Affections of the Kidneys) on account of the consensus of the vessels lying upon the spine, namely the vena cava and the great artery, by means of which both the legs and the testicles sympathize with the kidneys, as dissections testify.

Pain in nephritis kidney inflammation/stone pain is irritated, as Hippocrates teaches in On Diseases, book 6, at the time when patients are filled with food: which Galen testifies to in the same place.

In the beginning, phlegmatic vomiting occurs, especially if the patients are by nature phlegmatic. But in the increase of the disease, on account of the pains and sleeplessness (and this most especially when they have a fever along with it, and have been exhausted by fasting), bilious vomiting also supervenes, as Galen testifies in the aforementioned places. The patient feels lighter after vomiting: and they are liberated from the affliction when the food has been evacuated and reddish grains small gravel or stone fragments have settled. Although a stone may not be expelled from the evacuation of food alone, it sometimes rests after being stirred.

The urine is thin at the beginning due to obstruction: but in an inveterate long-standing/chronic affection, it is often bloody. For a rough or angular stone, being pushed in the kidneys, wears away their substance
