ON THE PRIMARY AFFLICTIONS OF THE ADNATE TUNIC OF THE EYE
THESIS I.
Decorative drop cap letter I featuring two figures in a landscape.Among the organs of the external senses, of which five are counted by physicians and philosophers alike, the structure of the eye is as beautiful as it is difficult to investigate.
II.
Whether you look at the muscles, the tunics, the humors, or the spirits that constitute the eye, there is nothing that does not appear to require a specific explanation.
III.
Hence, a not insignificant disagreement has arisen between the physicians of the former and latter ages, which can only be easily judged by an impartial critic.
IV.
But because it would be too long to pursue all the afflictions of the eyes in a single συζητήσει discussion/debate, we shall omit the internal afflictions of the eyes and, for the present, deal only with the external ones, and indeed only those that are accustomed to occur to the adnate conjunctival or adhering tunic.
V.
The primary and most frequent of these afflictions are counted as πτερύγιον pterygium/wing-like growth, ὑπόσφαγμα hyposphagma/subconjunctival hemorrhage, and ὀφθαλμία ophthalmia/inflammation of the eye.
VI.
Now, a πτερύγιον is a fleshy eminence of the adnate membrane, which originates from the greater angle but progresses as far as the cornea or the iris of the eye, which it also often
