By the name of Papism I wish to be understood that which is peculiar to the Papists, of which they themselves are the authors, and which they have added to the Apostolic doctrine.

It remains, candid reader, that you attentively read and diligently weigh, and indeed examine, those things which are brought forward by me with no other zeal (of which thing I call God to witness) than the illustration of truth and the protection of true piety. For I do not in the least avoid or shrink from this, nor should I, provided that it is done with a mind alien to hatred and prejudice, applying that rule of truth to which I confess and fervently hope that whatever is said or written on these matters ought to be tested, just as if it were a touchstone. If we were all to do this, there would be fewer contentions in the Christian Church, and piety would flourish far more greatly.
